Frequently Asked Questions
We have provided these FAQ's in the hopes that they may be useful.

When do programs start?
Classes for Indoor Environmental Quality align with the academic calendar; with courses beginning each semester. Bioprocess Engineering is held once a year and begins with the Fall Semester. In general, classes will meet on Thursday evenings with the exception that for the first class only in Bioprocess Engineering, classes will meet on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Schedules for Strategies Series workshops vary by program.

What are costs?
The costs for all three programs are very competitive. The price of the Bioprocess Engineering certificates, taught mainly through SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, is $4749.00. The price of the Indoor Environmental Quality certificate, taught mainly through Syracuse University, varies by year. Prices for Strategies Series workshops vary by topic. Contact Susan Palé, Certificate Program Recruiter, for additional pricing information.

What are the prerequisites?
The prerequisites vary by program. Certificates in Indoor Environmental Quality and Bioprocess Engineering require a Bachelor's degree in engineering, science or Architecture. There are no degree requirements for participation in the Strategies Series.

Where are classes held?
Classes are held at a variety of locations, however, some of the courses have labs associated with them and are held on the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, LeMoyne College, and Syracuse University campuses.

How much time will I need to devote?
Courses are taught at a Masters level for Indoor Environmental Quality and Bioprocess Engineering. Participants in these programs may expect to spend two hours on assignments for each hour in class.

Will this count toward a Masters?
Participants in the Indoor Environmental Quality and Bioprocess Engineering certificate programs will earn graduate-level credit for each of the courses successfully completed. While successful completion of these courses does not guarantee admission to a Master’s degree program; upon admission, these courses may be applied towards a Master’s degree.

How do I apply for these programs?
The application process is somewhat different for each program. The Bioprocess Engineering certificate is a SUNY-ESF Certificate of Advanced Study program and requires a completed graduate application, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and a $60 application fee. The Indoor Environmental Quality program requires completion of a special certificate application and transcripts of previous course work. Strategies workshops require online registration (if paying by credit card) or completion of a registration form (if paying by order).(More)

How do I get more information?
Susan Palé, the Certificate Program Recruiter, plays a critical role in the programs. Contact her first if you have questions or want additional information about any of the programs. If she does not have the information you need, she knows how to direct you to the right person who can answer your question.

What if I am currently enrolled in a Master’s program, can I get credit for the coursework I have already done?
Several of the classes taught in these programs are current course offerings at Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. However, classes taught in the certificate programs contain technical knowledge as well as interpersonal and business skills, such as project management, business writing and presentation skills, as prescribed by the businesses that helped develop the programs’ curricula. The program’s Academic Advisor will make final decisions as to whether previously taken coursework could apply to an individual certificate program.

Can I get CEU credits?
Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry are both accredited universities and are able to offer CEU and PDHs necessary for maintaining some professional licenses. Participants are encouraged to contact their associations to determine which classes and how many credits will be accepted.

Will I need to have a laptop to participate?
Participants will not need a laptop for the certificate programs; however, access to a computer with standard capabilities (for example, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, Internet access and email capability) is required.

Is there financial aid to help with tuition?
The Bioprocess Engineering program is an accredited Certificate of Advanced Study and financial assistance may be available through the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Other certificate participants are encouraged to contact their local One-Stop to discuss available tuition assistance. If you need financial assistance, please contact the program recruiter, Susan Palé, and she can work with you to find available alternatives.

Will I be able to take time off during the program? What if I already have a family vacation planned?
The Indoor Environmental Quality and Bioprocess Engineering certificate programs follow an academic calendar. Thus, breaks are scheduled during the spring and over July and August as well as national holidays. Due to the pace of the program, participants are encouraged to schedule vacations during these periods.
